Picture Windows
Bay windows can be subdivided into two types—the picture windows form the middle part of the unit, while operable windows (like casement units) flank the inoperable middle one. If you don’t have the space or the budget for a bay window, you can simply use picture windows to obtain the lighting benefit. Note that these cannot be operated, but you can place them strategically, such as overlooking great views or where sunlight could enter them, to get the most out of these windows.
Casement Windows
Another common part of a bay window is the flanking windows, normally an operable one like a casement window. Again, if you don’t have the space or budget, you can just use casement windows by themselves. They’re great for ventilation, and when closed they make a tight seal, making them excellent insulators as well.
