Single- vs. Double-Hung Windows: What to Get

Windows come in a wide range of options, and two popular types are single-hung and double-hung windows. In this blog, Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City discusses the differences between these two, so you can decide which to get for your home.

Single-Hung Windows

Single-hung windows are a common type of window, with their defining feature being that only one sash can move. The bottom panel is set in place and does not open or close.

If you plan on a single-hung replacement window installation, you will get these benefits:

  • They’re less expensive.
  • They’re easier to install
  • They require less maintenance than double-hung windows.

However, single-hung windows can affect your home design choices as they can look more disproportionate on certain architectural designs. This could also limit light exposure and ventilation from room to room.

Double-Hung Windows

On the other hand, double-hung windows have two sashes that slide open and close. Unlike single-hung models, the top and bottom panels are operational, providing more airflow control within a room or throughout an entire home.

Double-hung windows offer beautiful views in any direction while allowing plenty of natural lighting in your living space. However, they come with a steeper price tag than single-hung options. They also need more maintenance due to their added moving components. A double hung window repair in Rapid City, SD, is also more pricey.

Comparison of Single- and Double-Hung Windows

When compared side by side, single- and double-hung windows are quite different.

  • Price and installation. Single-hung windows have a lower price tag and a relatively easier installation process as they do not require much labor or installation time.
  • Aesthetic appeal and ventilation. Single-hung windows may not contribute much to your home’s aesthetic appeal due to the limited lighting control. They may also not be the better option if you want to improve airflow in your living spaces.
  • Maintenance. Double-hung windows require more maintenance since they have more moving components.
