Read This Before Replacing Your Windows

Are your windows too old, dingy, and challenging to maintain? If so, then it may be time for a replacement window installation. To choose the right new windows for your home, consider your budget, energy efficiency needs, style preferences, and installation methods. You’ll want to get as much information about the process behind this project before moving forward with it.

Reasons to Replace Windows

There are many reasons to consider window replacement. Switching from old, inefficient windows to high-performance models can increase energy efficiency and improve comfort and indoor air quality. Choosing replacement window units also allows you to take advantage of customization. With so many colors, finishes and hardware to choose from, you can design your windows in a way that they will enhance the overall appearance of your home, both inside and out. New windows can also potentially increase the value of your home, which is a good thing if you are looking to sell in the future.

Types of Windows

When replacing your windows, the available materials and styles will depend on your budget and preferences. Here are some popular window types to consider:

  • Picture Windows. A typical picture window installation is designed to frame the view outside. Picture windows are more extensive, fixed windows. Unlike moving windows, the fact that they are permanent lowers the frame height, which does not distract from the view outside.
  • Casement Windows. Casement windows open like doors with hinged sashes set into frames on either side. After installation, they bind well to minimize heat loss in cooler climes and keep inner warmth on windy days. Trapped winds reduce the water entry.
  • Sliding Windows. Sliding windows provide adjustable ventilation by quickly shifting panels horizontally along parallel tracks, allowing for multiple operating modes such as “ventilation only” or whole openings. They also protect against weather factors, especially in colder climates.
  • Single-Hung Windows. They have two sashes that operate vertically in the frame with just one moving pane, typically the bottom. These offer an excellent balance between performance and cost for many homeowners.
  • Double-Hung Windows. Double-hung windows feature two operable sashes within a single frame. Thanks to their sloping sill design, they become highly customizable for ventilation needs and are easy to clean from the inside.
  • Awning Windows. Awning windows have similar shapes because both glass sections hinge directly from the upper part of their basic structure. This creates a natural angle that helps control snow accumulation.

Factors to Consider

Before deciding to replace windows, make sure you take several considerations into account, including the expense, energy economy, type of window, and resistance against environmental elements. Maintenance costs will add up over time, so you must account for them as well. More importantly, work with a contractor who can install your windows correctly and within manufacturer standards. This way, you can get the most out of your investment and ensure they last a long time.
