Essential Tips on Selecting the Right Window Size

If a double hung window repair can no longer solve your window problems, it’s time to plan for a replacement. And in this type of project, one aspect that you should pay special attention to is the size of the window. Make sure that you are getting a correctly sized window for your home by taking into account the following considerations listed by Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City.

Window Placement

Consider the location where you plan on installing a window. If the area will give you a north-facing window, you might want to think about getting a large window so that you can benefit from the sunlight during winter. However, make sure that the room won’t heat up too quickly once the warmer months arrive. North-facing windows can bring in a little too much sunshine, especially during the summer, so you might want to add eaves and awnings to these windows as well.

Floor Area

Floor area is also an important factor in replacement window installation. Typically, if you have an east-facing window, experts recommend windows with sizes that do not exceed 15% of the room’s total floor area. Meanwhile, for south-facing windows, window size should not be over 15% of the room’s total floor area.

A Note on Standard-Sized Windows

Replacement windows are often available in standard sizes, making it easier for homeowners to select and shop for new windows. Standard window sizes range from 24 to 48 inches for width and 36 to 72 inches for height. Of course, since some windows are not originally made with these measurements, custom window sizes are highly recommended when seeking a replacement. That said, you should definitely have a contractor measure your existing window so that you can get the right replacement.
