Can You Use Tap Water to Clean Replacement Windows?

One of the biggest advantages of a picture window installation is its large uninterrupted glass area. This makes it an excellent choice for living rooms where you want to turn a beautiful outdoor view into a focal point of your interior design. However, views from your window can be affected by how well the glass is maintained, no matter what style of window you have.

Dirt and dust can accumulate on the glass surface of a window over time. Thankfully, Renewal by Andersen® replacement windows are easy to keep clean with a safe window glass cleaner or, in a pinch, a damp cloth. Before you wipe away smudges and stains with a water-soaked rag, however, our experts at Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City recommend checking your water quality first.

What Is Water Quality?

When you use hard water to clean your windows, it might lead to some premature replacement and double-hung window repair. Water quality refers to the hardness of your water, that is, the amount of minerals dissolved in your supply. It’s normal to have trace amounts of potassium, magnesium, and other minerals in your tap water. In some areas, however, these minerals are present in high enough amounts that could cause unsightly deposits and discoloration on your windows or, in worst-case scenarios, cause minor scratches on the glass.

How to Determine Water Quality

The fastest way to see if your home has hard water in its pipes is to call your water utility. You can also ask your plumber to test the hardness of your water. Hardness can affect other parts of your home as well so checking it now could also save you some trouble in the future.

Can You Clean Windows With Hard Water?

If you’re uncertain about using the water on your home on your replacement window installation, you can choose to use a gentle window glass cleaner instead. Make sure you use a non-abrasive cloth like a microfiber rag to minimize streaks and scratches after a good cleaning.
