Signs of a Poorly Installed Door

It can be frustrating when your sliding or French doors installation doesn’t go exactly as planned. Aside from the usual problems that arise during operation, poorly installed doors can also lead to other serious issues on the energy efficiency and security of your home. Doors and windows account for approximately 30% of a home’s energy losses. This number can be higher when your doors are not installed correctly.

The problems caused by improper installation of your doors will seem minor initially. This is why many homeowners make the mistake of ignoring the early symptoms. However, these problems can become worse over time and it’s best to address them quickly.

How Bad Installation Occurs

When you hire uncertified or inexperienced door replacement services, they are bound to make mistakes during the installation. These include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Incorrect measurements
  • Improper equipment or tools
  • Uneven levels
  • Lack of maintenance during the installation process

Signs of a Poorly Installed Door

Keep an eye out for the following symptoms that your doors were installed improperly or incorrectly.

  • Brand-new replacement doors and patio doors should not creak or make any noise when they are opened or shut. Sliding doors should not stick immediately after installation and French doors should have hinges that swing smoothly right off the bat. If your door does not meet these criteria, it can be a sign of poor installation.
  • Your sliding patio door should not appear crooked and should glide easily in its tracks. Alternatively, your hinged French door should not make streaks on your floor when opened. When these happen, it’s very likely that your door jambs were not levelled correctly during installation.
  • Take a look at your energy bills after the installation. If you’ve done no other home improvement other than a door replacement and you notice a slight increase in your consumption, your door is the likely culprit.
