Historical Architectural Styles in South Dakota

Houses in South Dakota display a wide variety of styles. Some of these homes display the influence of materials, shapes, detailing and features of architectural styles that were in style when the house was originally constructed.

Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City, trusted replacement window contractor, briefly discusses a few architectural styles present in the state:

Architectural Styles

The Italianate style was common in expanding towns in the Midwest and it flourished between 1850-1880. It is characterized by a low-pitched roof with wide overhanging eaves with decorative brackets and tall, narrow, and curved windows. Gothic Revival architecture can usually be found in churches in South Dakota. Buildings in this style have a steeply pitched roof with steep cross gables and windows with a pointed-arch shape.

Second Empire homes were popular in the northeastern and Midwestern states during 1860-1880. They have a distinctive Mansard roof with dormer windows on a steep lower slope. The eaves in this kind of home project less than an Italianate style. Colonial Revival homes have an accentuated front door with a decorative pediment and their facade feature symmetrically balanced windows and a center door. This style was dominant during the first half of the 20th century.
