Heavy Rain and Flash Floods Hit Rapid City in May

May 2018 — A once-in-a-century downpour hit Rapid City causing floods in several areas. As an experienced replacement window contractor, we advise our readers to stay alert and to prepare their homes for any kind of weather. Severe weather is always possible during volatile times of the year. Learn more about this news here:

The May 18 Storm

The rainfall was heaviest over the Robbinsdale area where a new stormwater detention cell was recently constructed. According to the National Weather Service, rainfall amounts reached up to 2.6 inches of rain per hour. The rain was so heavy that the chance of it occurring at any given time is one percent. Dale Tech, director of public works for Rapid City, called this downpour a 100-year event because of how unlikely it is.

The storm caused problems such as flooded structures and washed away vehicles; however, the new stormwater detention cell protected areas downstream from damage. Tech said the stormwater detention facility worked as planned.

After the storm, street crews cleaned over a hundred tons of material left behind by the flooding, such as branches, landscaping, gravel and other debris. A storm like this is unlikely but clearly not impossible. As an experienced window installation company, we recommend that homeowners make sure their homes are ready for bad weather.
