Single or Double-Hung Windows: Which Is Better?

Single and double-hung windows are not just popular window styles. They’re classic and iconic; it’s hard to go wrong with these windows.

There are some important things you have to note about single and double-hung windows, though. Depending on your window requirements, one may be more suitable to your home than the other.

Trusted window installation company Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City explains how these two types of windows differ from one another. We also offer tips on choosing between single and double-hung windows.

Difference Between Single and Double-Hung Windows

A single-hung window is made with one fixed sash on the top and one moveable sash on the bottom. It slides up from the bottom so that it partially covers the top sash.

A double-hung window, on the other hand, has two stacked, moveable sashes. Both sashes can open at the same time since the window can slide down from the top and up from the bottom. Additionally, the top and bottom sashes of most double-hung windows can also tilt in and out.

Which Is Better?

Judging by the descriptions above, you may be inclined to think that double-hung windows are probably better than single-hung windows. However, if you ask your replacement window contractor, they will likely tell you that there are many things to be admired in single-hung windows too.

For instance, single-hung windows are a little cheaper than double-hung windows. They’re also less susceptible to air infiltration or leakage. This is mainly because the top sash is fixed, so it doesn’t have the tendency to loosen like the moveable sash. Single-hung windows are perfect for maintaining an authentic look on historic homes as well.

Double-hung windows, on the other hand, are typically easier to clean, thanks to their tilt-in design. Moreover, since the upper sash on double-hung windows can be opened, they allow better airflow in your home. Double-hung windows can be an advantage for homes with small children too. You can keep the lower sash closed and the top sash open to maintain airflow.
