Essential Tips for Choosing the Best Window Hardware

Window hardware may slightly have a different meaning depending on who you’re talking to. For interior stylists, this may refer to the curtain rods, holdbacks and other items used for window treatments. But when you talk to a window installation company, window hardware typically refers to the components that enable a window to function properly. This includes the latches, bolts, hinges, cranks and sashes among others.

That said, getting the right hardware for your window is essential to its smooth operation. In this article, Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City shares a few tips on how to select the best hardware for your window.

Casement

Casement hardware is usually composed of latches, bolts, hinges, and stays. Latches are the ones that allow you to open and lock the window. You can have them in vertical and pivoting lever style or in fastener bolts and ring handles.

Bolts are the long arms that run vertically along the window. They are responsible for keeping the sashes from bowing. Hinges, which are commonly found on the side of the door, are the joints on which the window swings. Stays function as smart adjusters that allow you to open or close the window depending on how much air you want.

Sash

The sashes are basically the moving panels of glass, and they typically require certain mechanisms in order to function and stay secure. The sash locks are located at the top of the window, and they keep the sash secure and tightly closed. Lifts, the handle at the bottom of the window, enables the opening and closing of the sash. Stops are used when a sash won’t stay open. You can ask your replacement window contractor to help you locate these parts.

Window Bars and Grilles

Bars and grilles are mainly used to improve security, as they can help prevent falls and intruders. These are usually found in single and double-hung windows, casement windows and sliding windows.
