3 Common Winter Door Problems

Although your doors may not seem to be quite affected by winter’s harsh conditions, they are just as susceptible to it and there are unique problems that manifest during this season. Most doors are designed to withstand the elements and this often lulls many homeowners into a false sense of security.

In this post, your entry and French doors installation experts at Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City share the three most common problems doors experience in winter.

1.Color Fading

Winter’s harsh conditions will cause the door’s color and finish to fade faster, and in some cases, permanently ruin its once pristine appearance. Wooden doors are especially susceptible, though this can be mitigated with treatments against moisture.

One way of preventing color fading in winter is by switching to doors made from composite materials. They boast the same aesthetics as wood but are more durable and resilient towards winter’s harsher conditions. We install these kinds of doors as part of our door replacement services.

2.Loose Screws

The sudden and periodic change in humidity and temperature may cause the screws holding up the door to loosen. While this may not initially seem serious, it may eventually cause the door to sag within its frame if left unaddressed. Fortunately, addressing this problem is as simple as tightening the screws. For screws that are stripped, you’ll need to drill in a new pilot hole.

3.Damaged Weather Stripping

Weatherstripping is responsible for blocking drafts from getting into your home. They get worn out over time as well though, especially during the winter. You can tell if a door’s weatherstripping is worn out if you feel a draft coming from the door.

You can address this by installing new weather stripping. Keep in mind that if your door is years past its prime and already old and worn out, it’s better to simply install a new door with fresh weather stripping for updated functionality and aesthetics.

Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City will make sure your new entry and sliding patio door is properly installed. Call us today at (605) 341-7831 to learn more. Our door replacement services are available throughout Spearfish, SD and other parts of South Dakota.
