What Is a Good SHGC Rating for Windows?

You should prioritize choosing windows that are energy-efficient when replacing your old units. When evaluating window products, consider their solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC).

In this post, Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City discusses the importance of SHGC and shares tips on determining what rating is ideal for your windows.

Understanding SHGC

SHGC refers to the amount of solar radiation that can penetrate a window by direct transmission or absorption. Less solar heat is transmitted into your home when windows with lower SHGC ratings are used. However, if the SHGC is higher, it means the window allows more solar radiation to enter your space, creating a warmer indoor environment. Depending on where you live, this can be either a good or a bad thing.

Determining the Ideal Rating for Your Windows

Typically, the SHGC rating is assigned to the whole window assembly and is meant to quantify the energy efficiency of all components, including glazing, window frame, spacers and glazing panels.

When it comes to colder climates, windows with an SHGC rating of 0.30 to 0.60 are recommended. They ensure that the heat from outside is maximized inside your home. Because they help warm your home naturally, these windows can help reduce your reliance on your heating system, resulting in lower energy costs on your utility bills during the colder season. To further maximize your energy savings, ensure that your exterior patio doors also have a high SHGC rating. You should choose windows with a lower SHGC rating if you live in a warmer climate. This way, you can keep your home cool during summer.
