How to Bring More Natural Light to Your Home This Fall

As fall brings in shorter days and colder weather, most of us will be staying indoors more often to keep warm and comfortable. Because of this, you may end up missing the days spent outside and under the sun. Of course, you can still feel its natural warmth by letting more natural light into your home. Doing this regularly won’t just reduce your dependency on artificial daylight but also improve your productivity and well-being.

If you’re wondering how you can add more sunshine to your home, Renewal by Andersen® of Rapid City shares a few ways to do it:

Incorporate Transoms and Sidelights

Your home’s entry doors can benefit from the addition of transoms and sidelights. Apart from enhancing the appearance of your main entries, they also help illuminate the surrounding interiors during daytime hours. Install a transom above the door, as well as two sidelights on each side (or only one if you have limited space), to maximize natural light entering your home. If privacy is a concern, however, you can choose textured or frosted glass patterns for the sidelights.

Consider Sun Tubes and Skylights

The sun can always brighten any dark room and make it more inviting in your home. Another way to let in more natural light is by keeping your windows open. This can immediately improve the overall mood and increase productivity in the daily tasks you’re set to do. Skylights are also effective in bringing more light into your home so if you don’t have one yet, consider adding one to your roof! Sun tubes are also effective in smaller areas such as the laundry or bathroom.

Renovate Your Exterior

If you’re willing to invest more in your home, you can upgrade or add more windows to let in more sunshine. Since the north side of the exterior typically faces the sun all day during fall and winter, you can install larger windows so that your interiors can bathe in more natural light during the day.
