How Do You Know if Your Window Seals Have Failed?

Modern multipane windows feature at least two panes separated by a spacer and secured together at the edges. In between the panes is air or gas, such as argon and krypton, for added insulation. The glass may also come with low-emissivity coatings for added protection against ultraviolet rays. These windows will remain energy-efficient as long as their seals stay intact.  

Once window seals break, the gas inside the panes will leak, and moisture from outdoor air will infiltrate the panes. Here are common signs of window seal failure. 

Common Signs of Window Seal Failure

Condensation Between Panes

The first thing you need to do is to perform a visual inspection of your windows. Fogging between the panes of glass is the most common sign of failed window seals. If your windows have condensation that you can’t wipe, their seals are likely broken. The hazing can appear and clear out as weather conditions change. It usually happens when there is a significant temperature difference between indoor and outdoor spaces. 

Distorted Glass

Sometimes, when the insulative gas leaks from multipane windows, the glass can start warping. The glass can bend and collapse in the middle, causing it to appear contorted and sometimes develop damage. To determine if you have distorted window glass, stand at a distance from the affected unit. Look at the reflection on the windows. Distorted images could mean that the windows have failed seals.

Often, window replacement is the best solution to this problem, especially if the affected units are old. This option is ideal if the windows’ frames and hardware are deteriorating.
